I learned about Newtons Particle Model and Huygens Wave model. Newton believed that light traveled in the form of corpuscles, or light emitting particles, that bounce off objects like a ball bounces off things. Huygen thought, that like water, light traveled in waves and moves, or refracts, around objects in its path.
We also learned that light slows down and bends when it does into a denser medium.
How I Learned These Ideas
We learned that Huygens model was made by the observation that a sharp shadow is cast by the sun past a sharp object, like a wall. To test this, We put a ruler in front of the projector by the smart board and saw that there was a sharp shadow. Then we moved the ruler closer to the projector and saw that the shadow got fuzzier.
Using the experiment from the website we had for homework, we concluded that light bends up and towards itself when it goes into a denser medium.
What Real World Applications are There
Without understanding of light, we would not be able to have cameras. we have to understand how light reflects, refracts, and travels through lenses in order to make telescopes, cameras, and binoculars.
